The devotion to the miraculous Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno attracted a huge following among the populace. Popularity, initially in the northern and southern provinces of Luzon, spread over time throughout the country.
The uniquely Filipino devotion to the Black Nazarene merited the sanction and encouragement of two popes. In 1650, Pope Innocent X gave his pontifical blessing with a Papal Bull that canonically established the Confraternity of the Most Holy Black Christ Nazarene and Pope Pius VII gave his second blessing in the 19th century, by granting plenary indulgence to those who piously pray before the image of the Black Nazarene of Quiapo.
In June 2007, a chapel of the Black Nazarene was constructed at the right wing of the Basilica of Our Lady of Penafrancia., Known for their devotion to the Jesus, Mrs. Rosario Lo and family, spearheaded the construction of the chapel. From then on, many pilgrims to INA usually drop by the chapel an utter prayers and seek refuge to her son.
Even if the usual feast is every 9th of January, Msgr. Romulo Vergara, the Basilica Rector, introduced the feast in honor of the Black Nazarene every Friday before the Holy Week after 9 days of novena and procession around the patio of the basilica. Many devotees are happy with the timely celebration of the Nazareno within the Lenten season.
