In celebration of the month for the Sick and Handicapped last February, the Basilica Minore headed by Msgr. Romulo Vergara, sponsored the Tercentenary Medical and Dental Mission in two poor parishes of the Archdiocese.

Last February 27, the outreach program was held at the Our Lady of Salvation Parish, Salvacion Iriga City. Fr. Abundio Nopre, the Parish Priest, said that the 160 patients for the dental and 200 for the medical are so thankful to the group composed of 13 dentists and 4 medical doctors who visited the parish. Also last March 6, 2010, another outreach was held at the Parish of St. John Mary Vianney, San Ramon, Iriga City. Fr. Eduardo Pesigan, its parish priest, expressed his gratitude to the mission team after almost 320 patients of dental and 600 medical patients received proper treatment from 6 dentists and 5 medical doctors. The medical missions catered to all barangays under the two poor parishes of Iriga City.

Msgr. Vergara said that the purpose of the Medical and Dental Mission is to provide assistance to our needy faithful with the necessary medical assistance as we celebrate the tercentenary of our Devotion to Our Lady of Penafrancia. INA is known to be a healer. The church’s social responsibility calls for providing our people not only with spiritual but also bodily health.

The project was also supported by the Rotary Club-Naga, the Mother Seton Hospital, Mo. Josefa Hospital, Bicol Medical Center, Missionaries of the Poor Sisters, the Penafrancia Young Professionals (PYP) as well as the doctors and nurses of various schools and private individuals who donated medicines to the project.
